Apple overtakes Coke

After 13 years at the top, Coca-Cola has been dethroned by Apple as the world’s most valuable brand according to a report by Interbrand, a branding and corporate identity consulting company. Placement on the company’s Best Global Brands annual report, which it’s been producing since 2000, is decided based on a variety of criteria including financial performance and public impact. According to this year’s report, Apple’s value is currently estimated at $98.3 billion, a 28% increase from 2012.

The upset for the soft drink giant as well as the current top 10 are just some of the signs of the dominance of technology brands in the marketing community. Many of Apple’s rivals are in the top ten including Google (now in 2nd place up from 4th), Samsung (from 9th to 8th), Microsoft (still 5th), I.B.M. (3rd to 4th) and Intel (8th to 9th).

Although Apple might have won the value game, a bright spot for Coca-Cola is its Facebook popularity, with 73.2 million likes on its Fan Page as opposed to Apple’s 9.8 million. For more information check out the NY Times’ article.

Beddau Knights 61 – 79 Barry Huskies 


For this pre season friendly Beddau played host to a mixed team from Barry made up of players from their 1st, 2nd and 3rd division teams. 


The first quarter Beddau started ok with a 3 pointer from Rob Williams and good strong inside play by centre Leon Vincent and control on the top of the key by Nick Bartlett but on D the seniors looked as poor as the U18s the night before, little or no help defence, almost no boxing out and no communication, after a 5 for 5 change the only difference was all the scoring came from top of the key player Joel Richards, the defence was excruciating to watch. By the end of the quarter Beddau had managed to score 19, but the holes in the defence had allowed Barry to score 25. 


To start the second quarter, another change of personnel, this time the only difference was the scorer for Beddau was Dai Hale, the defence continued to be full of holes, Barry scoring another 13 points to Beddau’s 7. A time out and change of defence, a few harsh words, Beddau seemed to wake up a little, working more as a team at last both on offence and defence, Barry had to work harder only just edging the rest of the quarter by 2. This quarter Beddau scored 12 to Barry’s 21 points. 


The half time score was Beddau 31, Barry 46 


The third quarter Beddau went with a small team in a zone D, the change from the first quarter was like night and day, the intensity of the defence was brilliant, talking to each other, help D, it was all there while on offence Rob Williams was hitting his shots, when he came off Joel Richards took over, Beddau outscored Barry 11 points to six in the first half of this quarter, a few more changes of personnel, as this was a friendly to see who could do what against a quality side, Barry put in their best players and Beddau held their own, now playing as I know they can. Beddau won this quarter 19 points to 14. The score was now Beddau 50, Barry 60. 


The fourth quarter Beddau gave the bench players more time, Barry went strong and took control again, but it was still better than the first quarter. The last five minutes Dai Hale came back on and took it to the boards racking up 5 quick points. Barry won this quarter 19 points to 11. 


The final score was Beddau 61, Barry 79.

Considering the horrible defensive show in the first half the score was ok, especially as Barry played some high quality first division players to the game, we have to remember how we played defence in the third quarter and we’ll do ok. Boxing out might help too!

I can never remember where the game was played, what year it was, or even how many points Larry Bird scored.  The only thing I remember is the Atlanta Hawks bench.

(For the record, it was in New Orleans, 1985, and 60 points, on 68% true shooting)

Larry’s Sixty, on mostly jump shots, was a legendary performance, but the show on the sidelines was better.

The hairstyles say it all: Jim Carrey‘s bowl cut and Jeff Daniels‘ unruly blond mop signal the return of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, the heroes of the classic comedy film Dumb & Dumber. Both actors took to Twitter recently to share photos of themselves on the set of Dumb and Dumber To, meaning the long-awaited sequel to the 1994 original is finally in the works. Production began yesterday in Atlanta, and brothers Bobby and Peter Farrelly are once again in the director’s chairs. (Keep in mind Jeff Danielsjust took home the trophy for best actor in a drama series at last Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards show, so he should be in for an interesting change of pace.) Warner Bros. passed on the project in June but Universal Pictures picked it up. We’ll have to wait and see if it was a wise decision, but in the meantime we’re keeping our fingers crossed.

Pretty soon you can own the red and black Nikes that Michael Jordan wore in Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals — the legendary “flu game.” Well, you can if you have six figures of disposable income sitting around that you can spend on shoes you will never wear. And if so, well, good for you.

You remember the game. The series was tied 2-2 and before the critical Game 5 Jordan was battling a 103 degree fever — which legendary Jordan trainer Tim Grover still says was due to intentional food poisoning — and still found a way to score 38 points, grab seven rebounds and drag the Bulls to a key win. Among all of Jordan’s legendary games and accomplishments, this one was right at the top.

After the game, he autographed the shoes and handed them over to an industrious Jazz ball boy (there is photographic evidence of this), who has kept them under lock and key since.

Now he will auction them off through Grey Flannel Auctions, with bidding opening in November, reports Dan Devine at Ball Don’t Lie

“We were approached by the ball boy because of our affiliation with the Basketball Hall of Fame,” (Grey Flannel director of operations Michael) Russek told BDL. “He never looked to sell them before now. I think he recently realized that he was getting a little older and was more curious than anything to see if people still cared about the story.”

Um, yes they still do. A lot.

“He wants someone else to have them who can display them better, as they’ve sat in a safety deposit box for the last 15-plus years,” Russek said. “Mainly, he wants Jordan fans to hear the story and know they are out there and how they were obtained.”

The story will get out there, and said ball boy will make a hefty chunk of change. Capitalism at its finest.
