Derrick Rose said at the press conference for his recent contract extension that he really doesn’t know how much money he makes.
Let me help you out a bit Derrick — you are about to make mountains of cash.
Adidas is about to give Rose a lifetime contract worth about $250 million, according to ESPN.
One industry source insisted to ESPN.com this week that Rose’s new shoe deal with adidas will easily crack nine figures and could legitimately approach the $250 million range — as in $25 million annually over a 10-year span — in what is known in the shoe game as a “lifetime” deal.
How can the reigning MVP possibly command those kind of dollars as a shoe endorser?
Here’s how: Rose, as it was explained to me, is adidas’ only counter to Kobe Bryant in China. I’m told Rose already outsells LeBron James there.

The Clippers are pure Los Angeles now — entertainment with some basketball thrown in as a bonus.
The Clippers are a show and Staples Center was filled and buzzing like a movie premiere — people want to see Chris Paul throwing lobs to Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. They wanted and got Derrick Rose vs. CP3. This is L.A. where everybody flocks to the hot new thing and the Clippers are that.
The team didn’t disappoint, starting with the first play when Joakim Noah slipped and Blake Griffin flew past him to throw down the crushing dunk. The video board was busy all night with replays of monster plays at the rim.
And when the dust settled, the Chicago Bulls had the win 114-101. Because they are the better team.
“Our defense and our rebounding is an issue,” Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said after the game. “We’re giving up too many points right now.”
That may be an understatement — the Clippers are a ways from being a good defensive team. The Clippers are quite a show, their athleticism can be overwhelming, but they remain a work in progress. Particularly on defense. Their execution isn’t good enough on either end, they lack enough depth on the roster (particularly inside), the chemistry between Griffin in Paul is starting to marinate but is along way from where it can and needs to be. The Clippers are a team of potential trying to figure out who they are.
On the other hand the Bulls know exactly who they are, and they have their chemistry down. In the fourth quarter they just kept going at an elbow pick-and-roll with Rose and Carlos Boozer and the Clippers couldn’t stop it.
When L.A. collapsed in to stop Rose’s drives he knew Ronnie Brewer and Kyle Korver would be there for the weakside corner three (there were three of those in the fourth quarter). The Clippers didn’t know how to stop it. Plus, Rose did some of those Rose-like things in the lane nobody can stop. He’s a good show himself.
Rose is especially dangerous when he can step back off a high screen and drain a three, something he did twice in the fourth. Rose finished with 29 points (on 14 shots) plus 16 assists. He bested Paul, who himself was impressive with 15 points and 14 assists. The two had a duel going in the second half that Rose described as “fun.” Paul several times drove into the strong-side Tom Thibodeau defense, drew everyone in and found shooters lurking on the weak side.

The 2012 United States Olympic team will land in London the overwhelming favorites for the gold medal.
But they will not just be battling Spain — the best team in their way and a legitimate threat — they will be battling history. 2012 will be the 20th anniversary of the original Dream Team — Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley and more on a team that strolled to the gold medal and changed the trajectory of international basketball.
USA Basketball president Jerry Colangelo thinks the 2012 will be favorably compared to the Dream Team. He spoke with Chris Tomason of Fox Sports Florida.
“I think it will be a fair comparison with the Dream Team,” the USA Basketball chairman said in a phone interview Thursday with FOX Sports Florida about what can be expected from his team in London two decades after the Dream Team took gold in Barcelona in 1992. “Look at the progress our players have made since (winning Olympic gold in) 2008. We have some of the greatest players of all time.
“You’re hearing Kobe (Bryant) right up there with the greatest of all time. Dwayne Wade and LeBron (James) are right up there. You’ve got to add up the names, and you look at the young guys like (Kevin) Durant as an example and (Derrick) Rose as an example. There’s so many. There’s only been one Dream Team, and that’s the way I think it should be. But there’s no question our team will be much stronger than we had in 2008. They’re more mature, more experienced and we’ve got more talent.”
Team USA is going to have to be chosen without a training camp — rosters have to be submitted by June 20, while the NBA finals may not end until June 26 (they could end earlier, but not enough for a camp). We’ve talked before about some of the tough decisions in store for Coach K and his Team USA staff. In late January USA Basketball will release a list of 18-20 finalists for the team. In June, the 12-player roster plus up to six alternates will be submitted as the Olympics roster.
Team USA will open training camp in Las Vegas July 5. The Olympics begin three weeks later.

Michael Jordan has become engaged to longtime girlfriend Prieto, his spokeswoman confirmed to WCNC in Charlotte. Prieto is a Cuban-born model who has been dating Jordan for more than three years.
This would be Jordan’s second marriage. He was married for17 years to Juanita, but the couple divorced in 2006.
Jordan, the legendary Bull, is currently the owner of the Bobcats. As part of this marriage she could get half of the franchise in a divorce, so she might want to get a pre-nuptial agreement to protect herself.
No word on a wedding date (nor do I have any idea what you get Jordan for a gift, save for an All-Star wing for the Bobcats). All we can really say is congratulations and good luck.

You will need:
Two bottles of white rum 750 mL
Two big bags of skittles
5 empty water bottles
5 bowls
Coffee filter
16-20 hours
A funnel
First sort the 5 different colors of skittles in the bowls, once you've done so but the skittles in the the 5 water bottles.
Funnel the rum into each bottle evenly distributing the amount.
Shake each bottle for about 30 seconds and repeat for about 16 hours or longer until candy dissolves. Important that you periodically shake them
Once the candy dissolves filter the bottles with the coffee filters into a cup to get the remaining candy particles out.
After you get the candy particles out funnel the pure liquid back into the bottle. Shake them periodically because the sugar will settle at the bottom.
Mix with Sprite and enjoy.

the NBA is three days deep. What do we know? With so many opinions already floating around, here's my take on it.
Timmy thinks someone should stick a fork in Kobe. Says he's done.
With the Lakers 1-2 it's a not a great start. But look at it this way. Kobe has a fairly serious injury on his shooting hand. He's still dropping virtually the same numbers he did the last two years. They lost by 1 bucket from some tremendous last minute play by the bulls. Without Bynum. That's running brand new offense and defense with a new coach and new starters. Let's not forget they also dismantled Utah last night on the THIRD night of a back to back. Without Bynum.
Doesn't seem so bad now does it?
When you also consider that the Magic only really have the option of sending Howard to LA. New Jersey is off the table with Lopez hurting himself. Adidas won't let Howard to go to Chicago. LA suddenly have leverage. So what if the Lakers add Howard into the mix. Howard and Gasol make a pretty big front court.
But there's something else up here. Now that New Jersey are 0-2 with zero chance of getting Howard.. will Williams stay? Nope. Gasol for Williams?
Suddenly you got Kobe, Williams and Howard on the floor. With the strongest team in the east having deficiencies at Point Guard and Centre. Ouch.
Sure, it's not a great start. But Kobe is still putting up numbers. Despite playing back to back to back with a very sore wrist. The Lakers season could go either way, but even with the team they have now Kobe could take this team a very very long way. One thing is for certain. Kobe will have moved up the all time scorers list again this year.

He could be right. But there's more to the 2-0 Miami than meets the eye. After a huge victory over Dallas they played host to Boston with no Pierce last night coming away with an 8 point win. But here's the thorn in the Witness. It was Norris Cole who won the Heat this game. Who I hear you ask? Yeah that's the problem. The kid is nice. But where was Lebron and Wade? Scratching their heads against a Boston stint in a zone.
Yup, you got it. Boston just taught every team in the league how to stop Miami. The end of the third saw Miami go scoreless on eight straight possessions.
Will the run and gun Heat be able to go all the way with a rookie at the reigns and no real height (Bosh shooting three's now on the break)? Will they learn how to break an NBA zone? They have moved on from last year putting Lebron in the post. But just as they do, they move Bosh outside the stripe.
We'll have to wait and see. I mean, last year my rebuttal would have been how will you stop DRose with nobody at the point and a championship winning 2 guard?
Well the problem here is the Bulls haven't had the best start either. Sure, they look good defensively again. But Rip hasn't slotted in that well yet. Although I'm sure he will get better. For me the problem with the bulls is they are not allowed to have Howard (thanks Adidas). They beat the lakers on Christmas day. By 2 points. That's with an injured Kobe and no Bynum. Then the next night Rose got completely owned by an injured Curry in the Golden State (You reading Weezy)?
Curry dropped 21, 10 assists and 7 rebounds on Young Derrick. That gotta hurt for the MVP.
So who do we have left to discuss?
The Thunder have a downright DISGUSTING bench and the scorer of the decade. And one of the best point guards in the game. Harden is literally unstoppabale. In mohammed and Collinson the height off the bench to work with Maynor and Harden means the Thunder have no real weaknesses. They also have youth, chemistry and syne3rgy. My only concern here is the guy with the clipboard. I don't have faith in Scotty come playoff time.
With KD, Westbrook and Harden the thunder have the most dynamic scoring punch of any team not in the State of Florida (Bosh though?).
This is the only team that have yet to show any weaknesses. They hit the ground running, as Mikey predicted.
If Miami can learn to beat the zone, and find Lebron in the fourth (My guess he's at the taco bell stand cheering for Wade), and if the Lakers don't trade for Howard then Timmy could be right.
But right now, as with last year I can't call it out of Chicago, Boston, New York and Miami in the east.
Once New York get settled and D'antoni has perfected his sets this team could be deadly with chandler on the baseline. The Knicks looked better against the Celtics than the Heat did.
Over in the West the favourites have to be the Thunder. The only team who seem to have it together. But you better believe that Dallas will get better real quick. Odom still thinks he's a laker. Plenty of new pieces that need to settle in. The Lakers will be in the mix. Kobe, Bynum and Gasol means trouble for any team. If they manage to make some trades do they instantly become favourites even with Steve Blake?
Same with the East it's way too soon to call it. But the Lakers, Mavs and Thunder will be the top three teams come playoff time.
The Clippers could be nice if Billups learns how to play off the ball like tonight and the kids grow up (Caron). But right now you can't consider them to be one of the favourites to come out the west. First round exit if they finish bottom four of the bracket.
Wildcard teams this year? Memphis will have another good year. But look out for Indiana to have their best season in years. Minnesota will be much improved on last year (Love with 31 and 20 last night). And the Warriors will have a stormer with Curry and Ellis in the backcourt. Denver and Philly will again be hanging around when the regular season closes down.
Maybe Timmy could have a career as an NBA analyst.. or maybe he will just get lucky after not considering the bigger picture.

The game we missed
For three-plus quarters, the Clippers did not look like the Golden Child, the team anointed to take over Los Angles, lob city, Western Conference contenders. Their half court offensive execution was unimpressive and Chauncey Billups suddenly had the shot selection of a rookie.
Then Chris Paul took over the game. In the final 6:07 of the game he was 4-of-4 shooting for eight points, plus he had four assists and he was +16.
The Clippers cruised to a 105-86 win that sounds like a much bigger blowout than it really was. But they are 1-0 to start the season.
This game showed how far the Clippers need to go to live up to their potential. In the preseason against the Lakers Blake Griffin was slipping every-other screen he set for Paul, who was attacking aggressively off it. In this game any chemistry they seemed to be building was gone.
As a team the Clippers lacked energy on the road (save for DeAndre Jordan, who was blocking shots like an All-Star and finished with eight). Golden State owned the Clippers on the glass for three quarters (Jordan’s eagerness for blocks was part of that) and it nearly cost them.
But in the end they did what top teams do — they can be ugly for 40 minutes, own the last eight because the have the superior talent, and win going away. And make no mistake, CP3 was the superior talent late.
Golden State looked sloppy as well — Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis combined to shoot 8-for-31 on the night. With nine turnovers. Curry’s play made you wonder if his ankle bothered him, Ellis made you wonder where his head is.
Really, the whole game was ugly. Particularly at the end of the third quarter when rookie coach Mark Jackson decided to go with the “hack-a-Jordan” philosophy and keep sending DeAndre to the line. Let us thank the basketball gods that Vinny Del Negro did not counter with the hack-a-Andris Biedrins system. (By the way, Biedrins had a pretty solid game. He’s back, baby! Maybe.) Blake Griffin had 22 points but needed 18 shots to get there, which is still better than Billups 21 points on 19 shots.
It wasn’t pretty. We can thank the lockout for that. But in the end the best player on the court took over the game, which is what happens in the NBA and. It why you pay a steep price to go get a guy like Chris Paul. He’s that good. And he gets you wins with about six minutes of good play.

A great read while you are still sober enough
The Knicks don’t make sense.

Every team’s fans are defensive of their squad. I like to single out specific fanbases for sport, but in reality, it doesn’t matter the locale or composition. Teams fans will react similarly in most cases provided the writing is not on the wall in gigantic stenciled block letters that they are doomed. Portland fans will talk about Nate McMillan getting the most out of the players and LaMarcus Aldridge not being respected and how deep their team is despite it not being deep at all. Because the Blazers are good. Lakers fans will plug their ears, point to the championships and scream “La la la la I can’t hear you, we still have Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol,and Andrew Bynum.” Again, because the Lakers are good.
But the superteams in the NBA create something wholly different in fanbases. They react as if any critique of the two-to-three collections of star power is in fact some sort of dogmatic disrespect of those players’ abilities and/or their own parents’ lineage and social behavior. It’s deeply personal. I’m pretty sure it has to do with the excitement that a team’s fans feel upon finding out about the team-up.
How do you not get excited to find out that not only is Dwyane Wade staying, but he’s bringing Chris Bosh and the MVP LeBron James to town? Wouldn’t you be so thrilled that anyone trying to take away that parade would be seen as an enemy to your very happiness? You just found out Carmelo Anthony is joining your playoff team and you have the best frontcourt in the NBA.
Wouldn’t questions about their cohesion and defense seem like such a buzzkill that is rightfully yours after enduring the Isiah era?
So I understand the reticence, the defensivenes, the outright anger. But Knicks fans, Heat fans, Laker fans, please understand that before we continue, this is not about how good your team is. It’s about how they fit.

If you’re putting together the perfect meal, you’re going to select your menu and ingredients carefully. It of course depends on what you want to do, but there are still certain rules. And you’re going to want great ingredients to be sure. You want high quality meat, vegetables, spices, sauces, etc. But you still have to be consciencous of the meal itself. You can’t throw down a plate with chicken and three starches and say “Look! The rice and potatoes and potatoes are all of the highest quality! Best meal ever!” It doesn’t work like that.
And if you’re looking to create the perfect basketball team, well, first off, you’re going to fail because it’s impossible, but you’re also not going to say “I’m going to get the best scoring small forward and best scoring power forward in the league, and then we will triuph!” It’s just not what you would say. This isn’t to say that the Knicks’ acquisition of Melo was a bad move or that it can never work. At all. Because it wasn’t and it can. It’s just not ideal and it creates a tension between two very prominent lines of thought in regards to these collections of mega-talent.
1. Talent wins, and the more you have, the more you can overcome strategic, trending, or matchup disadvantages thanks to sheer overwhelming ability.
vs.
2. The right combination of talent when employed effectively is greater than a superior combination of sheer talent.
I’m not going to spit at you platitudes about the team effort of how the Mavericks’ righteoust triumph over the Heat or whatever proves this. The Mavs have somehow become identified as some sort of mutant Bad News Bears and in reality they featured multiple award-winning players all of whom have been stars at one point or another outside of J.J. Barea and DeShawn Stevenson. But the fact that the Mavericks’ system and collection of stars did have a cohesive and explainable blueprint should be noted.
Veteran game-managing, (suddenly) consistent outsdide-shooting point guard runs offense with few mistakes and key smart plays centered around Hall of Fame 7-foot Power Forward with exceptional range and shot-creation ability, anchored by All-NBA low-post, weakside, and at-rim defender capable of finishing alley-oops and converting putbacks alongside veteran combo forward with unique scoring ability and well-rounded combination of skills on both sides and a classic bench pure scorer.
That makes sense.
A veteran gunning point guard with decision-making and injury issues or an inexperienced young combo guard without pure playmaking skills or rookie shooting guard who is a pure scorer without handles supports a high-usage, all-range small forward who is most comfortable in ISO sets from the elbow or on the perimeter and a devastating power forward who also operates best from the elbow on his own and who needs a playmaking point guard to achieve his maximum efficiency backed by a veteran All-NBA low-post defender and at-rim attacker who can also score clean-up.
Not so much.
There’s no playmaker for the Knicks. There’s a lot of talk about Carmelo Anthony playing point forward, and who knows, maybe it will be effective enough. Maybe he’ll rack up the assits and it will be beautiful if odd. It still cannot be more effective than a playmaking point guard in a system built around maximizing offensive weapons, particularly unorthodox ones, and a strong set of consistent rebounders and pick and roll players who are more effective without the ball. It’s just not. If the Knicks are to succeed, it will be on account of simply having more talent than the opponent, that Melo and Amar’e are able to synthetically produce something resembling a cohesive plot for offense and Chandler is able to simply alter the course of all defensive strategy to accomodate for weaknesses from every other player on the roster. And it’s possible! That’s how important star power and talent is.
Just take a look at the Heat.
A mega-scoring, high-rebound-rate, gamble-defending shooting guard. A prolific do-it-all and rarely do enough, lock-down defender, brilliant vision in a Hummer-like body small forward. And a whisper-thin, mid-range joltin’, defensively adequate power forward.
It’s just not a perfect fit. It’s not even a good fit. None of us saw that when the Decison happened, though. It was just chaos and outrage and rainbows and pitchforks about the awesomeness or immorality of the move. But what we saw last year embodies everything about the super-team concept. Wade doesn’t know how to operate without the ball. James doesn’t know how to operate in the high or low post. Bosh is a stretch four. It’s like putting the best engine, tires, and stereo system together with a body shell and saying you have a car. You still don’t have a navigation system.
That team made the Finals.
But what eludes the Heat is that component to bring it all together. Same with the Knicks. If they’re going to succeed in being the NBA’s best, being more than that, being a truly great team, one for the ages, they are reliant on one or multiple of their stars doing things which they have not shown themselves capable of doing, or another player will have to fill that roll. Melo will have to become a centerpiece, the nexus, the docking port of the offense through wich all points run. James has to either become the low-post power forward they need or a pure passer, essentially surendering scoring duties. Stoudemire has to pass out of the low-post and defend, defend, defend. Wade has to be crafty and safe rather than explosive and dangerous. None of these things are intuitive. They’re possible. And with a little extra defense and some competent role play, they can win the title without it. But to be truly great, they still have to change identities, abilities, definitions.
Or have a system which naturally grafts them to those elements without actual transformation. You know, what the Lakers did.
Phil Jackson may have too often watched his team drown during runs, failed to instill any discipline whatsoever, and generally sit back and let talent do 90 percent of the work, but he did nothing if not put his players in a position to succeed.
And the triangle is what made the Lakers great. By running that multiple post option, it put the players involved in areas where they were most effective. Bryant on the wing or elbow, Gasol in the low post or elbow, Odom on the wing or low post. The mostion meant that they were creating, but within zones, within flows, in a rhythm, a cycle, a structure. There was no improvisation, not in terms of what is to be executed, even though so much of the Lakers’ offense was in fact Bryant improvising offense.
This isn’t to say that Mike Brown’s offense can’t maximize the Lakers’ ability, it will simply have to be done inside of a different paradigm.
But the Lakers re-inforce the fact that if you want to be able to tackle anything, you need more than the firepower, you need a blueprint which makes the whole war machine operable.
Which brings us to the Clippers.
Think about what the critical arguments are against the Clippers’ possibilities with this new amalgam of star power.
“Well,they’re the Clippers.” This is actually a fair point but it has nothing to do with structural elements, only voodoo and a fairly consistent pattern of failure.
“They’re young.” Yes, but they have some experience. Chris Paul is not a spring chicken, Chauncey Billups is downright ancient, and DeAndre Jordan is young but not a rookie. There’s experience here. Furthermore, the Thunder are young. I don’t see folks running away from them.
“Vinny Del Negro.” Ah, and there’s the first real tactical elemeent specific to them. But to consider Del Negro, we need to consider the first super-team of this era, at least of those created artificially (as opposed to organically as in the Spurs; we have to set the era at one point or another), the Celtics.
The Celtics had a big question going into 2007-2008. “What about Doc?” Rivers had the respect of everyone in the league. Bu pundits and some insiders had serious questiona about his ability to manage rotations, to effectively build lineups, to do anything tactical.
But the acquisition of the Big 3 meant that those concerns were covered. He didn’t have to manage Piece, Allen, KG’s minutes because they were veterans enough to say “I need a breather” or “I’m good” His work against Phil Jackson in the Finals was more of an impressive display of how Jackson struggles to adapt to anything he doesn’t anticipate than sheer genius by Rivers. Over the past three years he’s shown himself to be a master tactician and a brilliant in-game strategist and play-builder.
But that same experience in his first year is the same kind of thing that may allow Del Negro to excel. Because, quite simply, you can’t screw up Chris Paul – Blake Griffin = DeAndre Jordan.
It’s just not possible. No one could screw that up. And in doing so, it means Del Negro’s abilities are heightened (development, for example), and his deficiences are covered.
Why? Because it works, organically.
A pass-first, pure point guard who also shoots exceptionally well, which means that any aggressive hedge or over-coverage of the roll-man means he can decimate the opponent with his mid-range and floater. A power forward whose biggest strength is catching well-timed and thrown passes, particularly out of the pick and roll. A clean-up man with sheer unadulterated force and athleticism. And shooters on the perimeter.
The Clippers make sense.
If the Clippers disappoint us, it will be on account of some failure in intangibles, defense due to inexperience and unfamiliarity, or injury. But it won’t be because the model is flawed. The model is nearly flawless. This is why the trade was worth it. Chris Paul puts the Clippers’ ceiling higher than any other super-team, simply because of what he does and what they do. There’s no nasty crossover, no stepping on each other’s toes.
The Clippers may not have good enough ingredients, good enough instruments, a good enough chef. But the menu itself is right.
Let’s cook.

Every team’s fans are defensive of their squad. I like to single out specific fanbases for sport, but in reality, it doesn’t matter the locale or composition. Teams fans will react similarly in most cases provided the writing is not on the wall in gigantic stenciled block letters that they are doomed. Portland fans will talk about Nate McMillan getting the most out of the players and LaMarcus Aldridge not being respected and how deep their team is despite it not being deep at all. Because the Blazers are good. Lakers fans will plug their ears, point to the championships and scream “La la la la I can’t hear you, we still have Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol,and Andrew Bynum.” Again, because the Lakers are good.
But the superteams in the NBA create something wholly different in fanbases. They react as if any critique of the two-to-three collections of star power is in fact some sort of dogmatic disrespect of those players’ abilities and/or their own parents’ lineage and social behavior. It’s deeply personal. I’m pretty sure it has to do with the excitement that a team’s fans feel upon finding out about the team-up.
How do you not get excited to find out that not only is Dwyane Wade staying, but he’s bringing Chris Bosh and the MVP LeBron James to town? Wouldn’t you be so thrilled that anyone trying to take away that parade would be seen as an enemy to your very happiness? You just found out Carmelo Anthony is joining your playoff team and you have the best frontcourt in the NBA.
Wouldn’t questions about their cohesion and defense seem like such a buzzkill that is rightfully yours after enduring the Isiah era?
So I understand the reticence, the defensivenes, the outright anger. But Knicks fans, Heat fans, Laker fans, please understand that before we continue, this is not about how good your team is. It’s about how they fit.

If you’re putting together the perfect meal, you’re going to select your menu and ingredients carefully. It of course depends on what you want to do, but there are still certain rules. And you’re going to want great ingredients to be sure. You want high quality meat, vegetables, spices, sauces, etc. But you still have to be consciencous of the meal itself. You can’t throw down a plate with chicken and three starches and say “Look! The rice and potatoes and potatoes are all of the highest quality! Best meal ever!” It doesn’t work like that.
And if you’re looking to create the perfect basketball team, well, first off, you’re going to fail because it’s impossible, but you’re also not going to say “I’m going to get the best scoring small forward and best scoring power forward in the league, and then we will triuph!” It’s just not what you would say. This isn’t to say that the Knicks’ acquisition of Melo was a bad move or that it can never work. At all. Because it wasn’t and it can. It’s just not ideal and it creates a tension between two very prominent lines of thought in regards to these collections of mega-talent.
1. Talent wins, and the more you have, the more you can overcome strategic, trending, or matchup disadvantages thanks to sheer overwhelming ability.
vs.
2. The right combination of talent when employed effectively is greater than a superior combination of sheer talent.
I’m not going to spit at you platitudes about the team effort of how the Mavericks’ righteoust triumph over the Heat or whatever proves this. The Mavs have somehow become identified as some sort of mutant Bad News Bears and in reality they featured multiple award-winning players all of whom have been stars at one point or another outside of J.J. Barea and DeShawn Stevenson. But the fact that the Mavericks’ system and collection of stars did have a cohesive and explainable blueprint should be noted.
Veteran game-managing, (suddenly) consistent outsdide-shooting point guard runs offense with few mistakes and key smart plays centered around Hall of Fame 7-foot Power Forward with exceptional range and shot-creation ability, anchored by All-NBA low-post, weakside, and at-rim defender capable of finishing alley-oops and converting putbacks alongside veteran combo forward with unique scoring ability and well-rounded combination of skills on both sides and a classic bench pure scorer.
That makes sense.
A veteran gunning point guard with decision-making and injury issues or an inexperienced young combo guard without pure playmaking skills or rookie shooting guard who is a pure scorer without handles supports a high-usage, all-range small forward who is most comfortable in ISO sets from the elbow or on the perimeter and a devastating power forward who also operates best from the elbow on his own and who needs a playmaking point guard to achieve his maximum efficiency backed by a veteran All-NBA low-post defender and at-rim attacker who can also score clean-up.
Not so much.
There’s no playmaker for the Knicks. There’s a lot of talk about Carmelo Anthony playing point forward, and who knows, maybe it will be effective enough. Maybe he’ll rack up the assits and it will be beautiful if odd. It still cannot be more effective than a playmaking point guard in a system built around maximizing offensive weapons, particularly unorthodox ones, and a strong set of consistent rebounders and pick and roll players who are more effective without the ball. It’s just not. If the Knicks are to succeed, it will be on account of simply having more talent than the opponent, that Melo and Amar’e are able to synthetically produce something resembling a cohesive plot for offense and Chandler is able to simply alter the course of all defensive strategy to accomodate for weaknesses from every other player on the roster. And it’s possible! That’s how important star power and talent is.
Just take a look at the Heat.
A mega-scoring, high-rebound-rate, gamble-defending shooting guard. A prolific do-it-all and rarely do enough, lock-down defender, brilliant vision in a Hummer-like body small forward. And a whisper-thin, mid-range joltin’, defensively adequate power forward.
It’s just not a perfect fit. It’s not even a good fit. None of us saw that when the Decison happened, though. It was just chaos and outrage and rainbows and pitchforks about the awesomeness or immorality of the move. But what we saw last year embodies everything about the super-team concept. Wade doesn’t know how to operate without the ball. James doesn’t know how to operate in the high or low post. Bosh is a stretch four. It’s like putting the best engine, tires, and stereo system together with a body shell and saying you have a car. You still don’t have a navigation system.
That team made the Finals.
But what eludes the Heat is that component to bring it all together. Same with the Knicks. If they’re going to succeed in being the NBA’s best, being more than that, being a truly great team, one for the ages, they are reliant on one or multiple of their stars doing things which they have not shown themselves capable of doing, or another player will have to fill that roll. Melo will have to become a centerpiece, the nexus, the docking port of the offense through wich all points run. James has to either become the low-post power forward they need or a pure passer, essentially surendering scoring duties. Stoudemire has to pass out of the low-post and defend, defend, defend. Wade has to be crafty and safe rather than explosive and dangerous. None of these things are intuitive. They’re possible. And with a little extra defense and some competent role play, they can win the title without it. But to be truly great, they still have to change identities, abilities, definitions.
Or have a system which naturally grafts them to those elements without actual transformation. You know, what the Lakers did.
Phil Jackson may have too often watched his team drown during runs, failed to instill any discipline whatsoever, and generally sit back and let talent do 90 percent of the work, but he did nothing if not put his players in a position to succeed.
And the triangle is what made the Lakers great. By running that multiple post option, it put the players involved in areas where they were most effective. Bryant on the wing or elbow, Gasol in the low post or elbow, Odom on the wing or low post. The mostion meant that they were creating, but within zones, within flows, in a rhythm, a cycle, a structure. There was no improvisation, not in terms of what is to be executed, even though so much of the Lakers’ offense was in fact Bryant improvising offense.

Barnes said the Clippers should be feeling some positive vibes after adding Chris Paul, Chauncey Billups, Caron Butler and re-signing DeAndre Jordan this month, but thinks they may have gone overboard in showing that enthusiasm.
“They definitely have a much improved team here and are looking to make a push towards the playoffs,” Barnes said Thursday after the Clippers beat the Lakers in a pair of preseason games on Monday and Wednesday. “They have a lot of reason to be excited, but all the celebration after dunks and all that kind of stuff, I mean, I just kind of think it looks amazing and it makes ‘SportsCenter,’ but I mean, let’s just play basketball.”
Count Barnes as one person not exactly thrilled by the “Lob City” Clippers.
“They act like they won the dunk contest after every dunk,” Barnes said. “So, as players, people aren’t going to tolerate that.”
Barnes also discussed the flagrant-1 penalty he received for shoving Blake Griffin to the floor in the 3rd quarter of Wednesday’s game. Instead of apologizing, Barnes called Griffin a “flopper” and bemoaned the fact that, according to Barnes, “there’s no such thing as a hard foul anymore.”
For me, the main takeaway from this is that there’s finally a real rivalry between the two basketball teams that call the Staples Center their home. The Lakers have always been the undisputed kings of LA — now the Clippers are threatening that, and they’re doing it with a player the Lakers tried to trade for. Wednesday’s chippy game and Barnes’ comments seemed to mark the official beginning of a true rivalry in the City of Angels — personally, I can’t wait for more.

The retro Air Jordan Concord 2011s dropped Friday and people have flat out lost it. Not you dear reader, but the unwashed masses of sneakerheads out there.
In Seattle police had to use pepper spray and made an arrest in a crowd of more than 1,000 who showed up waiting for one store to open and start selling the shoes. In Lithonia, Ga. (near Atlanta) four people were arrested in a similar situation.
There was a frenzy online as well as orders crashed a couple shoe sites (not Nike’s site, but others), CNBC’s Darren Rovell reports on twitter.
Really people?

Heads will get jacked
Houstonians have been lining up for days for what sneakerheads nationwide consider one of the biggest product releases of the year: the Air Jordan XI Concord.
More than 200 people waited Thursday morning at the Foot Locker at Gulfgate Mall in anticipation of the re-release of the highly sought-after shoe.
Another 200 camped in front of the Footaction store on the opposite end of the shopping center.
At the Galleria, hundreds were outside the mall late Thursday. At least three Houston police squad cars stood watch.
The retro shoes don't go on sale until midnight Thursday, but fans started camping out as early as Monday for a chance to score the limited-release sneakers.
Edward Ledesma, 18, was the first in line at the Foot Locker. He had been waiting since Monday night.
"These are the shoes Michael Jordan used on the court," Ledesma said. "They're limited editions."
The shoes, originally released in 1995, are the latest in the Air Jordan XI line to be re-released. Enthusiasts like the shoes' patent leather coating and black-and-white color scheme.
At the Galleria, Jaccob Mejia, 19, said he has been waiting since midnight Tuesday. Mejia said he and his 15-year-old brother, Jonathan Perez, parked their car nearby and have been taking turns holding their place in line. While one would stay at the spot on West Alabama near McCue, near the Foot Locker, the other would sleep in the car.
Through the cold weather and the rain, the wait for the prized shoe is worth it, Mejia said.
"I like Jordans," Mejia said. "I'm a collector."
'I always buy them'
Lifelong shoe collector Gabriel Escalante, 25, had no problem with the wait, either.
"I've been wearing these shoes since I was a little kid," Escalante said. "They always come out again and again, and I always buy them."
Ledesma was in a similar spot on the same day last year, when the Air Jordan XI Cool Grey shoes came out.
Fights broke out at Deerbrook and Northline malls as sneaker aficionados waited in line to buy the coveted kicks.
Ledesma said he saw some violence as he waited in line last year.
"There were a couple fights out here," Ledesma said. "Some girls were fighting for the last ones."
A security officer at the Footaction store said he anticipates a smooth process this year, adding that Gulfgate is one of the safest in the area due to 24-hour police surveillance.
Passing the time with games
A Footaction employee said the store plans to hand out tickets for certain sizes to minimize customer disappointment.
Chelsea Soto and several of her friends played Jenga on Thursday morning as they waited for the Gulfgate Foot Locker to open. It had been a chilly, rainy night, she said, but the weather didn't dampen their enthusiasm.
"We're happy campers," Soto said.
The shoes, which retail for about $180 for adults, already were selling online for $300 to $500 on Thursday. Ramon Ramos, 15, said the shoes are a good investment.
"This is the second pair I'm going to get," Ramos said. "You can make a profit out of this. If you're a real sneakerhead you can just collect them, and later on they'll be worth a lot of money."

As if you needed any more convincing that the recent influx of camo-print fashions still held relevance, the Toronto Raptors announce the NBA’s first ever camouflage jersey. The move to create the camo jerseys is rooted in the Raptors’ ownership group’s support of the Canadian military. The jerseys will make their first official appearance on March 21 as part of the Canadian Forces Night. The print is mocked up in Canadian Disruptive Pattern, a traditional Canadian computer-generated digi-camo that has been used in a variety of climates and military operations through the years since its development. Although the application of the camouflage print aesthetic is questionable, the back-story of this NBA jersey iteration makes it more than mentionable.

Finally, Kris Humphries has found a way to get mentioned in the same sentence with LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.
In a new poll of the least liked NBA players — conducted by Nielsen and E-Poll Market Research, so you know this is legit — Humphries topped even the two traditional black hat guys in the NBA as the league’s most disliked. And this wasn’t just a poll of the Kardashian family. Although apparently for much of America the Net forward came off as the bad guy in all this.
The rest of the top 10 — check it out at Forbes Magazine — is names you expect. It’s filled with guys who have had messy divorces from either their wives or teams. Tony Parker from Eva Longoria, Carmelo Anthony from the Knicks. A few guys just make the list because of the team they are on. That said, Paul Pierce makes the list and Kevin Garnett doesn’t from Boston confuses me, but I’ve never really understood how the American public makes decisions anyway.

In a new poll of the least liked NBA players — conducted by Nielsen and E-Poll Market Research, so you know this is legit — Humphries topped even the two traditional black hat guys in the NBA as the league’s most disliked. And this wasn’t just a poll of the Kardashian family. Although apparently for much of America the Net forward came off as the bad guy in all this.
The rest of the top 10 — check it out at Forbes Magazine — is names you expect. It’s filled with guys who have had messy divorces from either their wives or teams. Tony Parker from Eva Longoria, Carmelo Anthony from the Knicks. A few guys just make the list because of the team they are on. That said, Paul Pierce makes the list and Kevin Garnett doesn’t from Boston confuses me, but I’ve never really understood how the American public makes decisions anyway.

What does LeBron James and Wesley George have in common?
Before the 2010/11 season LeBron James run his mouth and a new NBA era began. After signing for the Miami Heat, LeBron made his famous 'We (LeBron and Chris Bosh) didn't come here to win one championship, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven....' statement sparked a media frenzy unlike any other in NBA history. I have never known sport journalists or fans worldwide want a man or team to fail so much.
LeBron's statement made the NBA more popular than any other time in the post Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls era. When you look back, there was no doubt LeBron's comments indirectly promoted the NBA globally. People blogged, tweeted, changed their Facebook status as they were discussing, debating and making their predictions ahead of the season. Fans around the world wanted the NBA like Fung Chiu wants rebounds. The product had it all. An amazing list of players in the prime of their careers, the global exposure of the league and a player talking about winning multiple titles before he had even played a game with his new team mates...
Another player who was one of many debates before the 2010/11 season was Blake Griffin. Griffin was entering his rookie year (sophomore year, if you ask Nick Williams), expectations were high but to be fair Griffin exceeded them and lived up to the hype. His numbers and performances were ridiculous at times. He was quite rightly named Rookie of the Year. However, this was not enough to save Mr Wesley George some bills. Mr George's confidence in Griffin winning the award over John Wall was proved right. So, he picked up his 50 bucks off Nick Williams but it was Williams who had the last laugh. Mr George had a LeBron James moment. For some inexplicable reason, Mr George put his faith in the Clippers as well as Griffin costing him one hundred bills. Peep this...Mr George actually bet Mr Williams the Los Angeles CLIPPERS would have a better record than the Oklahoma City Thunder AND go further than the Thunder in the playoffs!! Perhaps, he got his Los Angeles teams mixed up?
See what happens when people run their mouth... LeBron and Mr George both got burnt. LeBron ended up ringless and Mr George found himself a little out of pocket. It goes without saying that LeBron's reputation took the bigger hit.
I heard a rumour this morning that things have got a little interesting again. No bets placed yet but we are just four days away from another NBA season and word on the street is Mr George is at it again. Oh, by the way the Clippers are again at the heart of the trash talking too. Surely, he is not going to do it again...
So, with not long left now guys before the season begins, if you want to make the season even more interesting than it promises to be, it's time to run your mouth!

We have to start with this disclaimer — it was a preseason game. Which means about as much as an autographed Derek Jeter baseball. Actually, less.
That said, Chris Paul had 17 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and five steals and was a +24 against the Lakers in his first game as a Clipper. He was everything advertised and then some — silky smooth and smart.
The Lakers had big men like Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol hedge out hard on him on the pick-and-roll, yet Paul seemed unfazed and just picked apart the Lakers defense. The Lakers turned the ball over 21 times so the Clippers had plenty of transition opportunities, and you knew Paul and his running mates would be good there.
The Clippers were putting on the show, they were fun to watch. The Lakers looked like a team with 10 days of practice with a new coach.
It should be noted that the Lakers interior defense was solid but they were terrible on the perimeter (Mike Brown even called out Kobe Bryant after the game). Paul and the Clipper guards exploited this mercilessly (13 of 28 from three). Chauncey Billups had a game high 23 points and looked comfortable as the two guard.
(The Lakers played defense with the intensity of the team that was swept out of the playoffs by Dallas.)
Again, one meaningless preseason game — even Brian Cook looked good for the Clips, you know that is not going to last — but this Chris Paul thing could work out very, very well in Los Angeles.

Kobe gets divorced
So, a couple of days ago news broke that Vanessa was leaving Kobe. First Phil left him, then Lamar, now Wifey.
The reason she dropped him like a hot potato isn't because they just hit the 10 year mark and she is entitled to half that $360,000,000. Nope. It's because he cheated too much. Not that he cheated. He did it TOO much.
TMZ is now reporting that this is who he was cheating with.. JESSICA BURCIAGA. BANG.
